A 10-month chemistry laboratory instructor/coordinator position is open to begin in August 2025. The candidate is expected to teach general studies, health sciences, or general chemistry lecture and laboratory courses. In addition, the candidate will oversee work-study students to complete laboratory preparations for all chemistry labs each week. A Masters or Ph.D. in some field of chemistry is preferred, but a candidate with at least 18 hours of graduate work in the field or relevant professional experience will be considered. The ideal candidate will have classroom and laboratory teaching experience, skills with Vernier systems and instrumentation, knowledge of laboratory safety, the ability to enrich the laboratory courses, and enthusiasm for working with undergraduates.
The candidate will also serve as the Chemical Hygiene Officer for the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry and WV Wesleyan campus. Responsibilities include updating the Chemical Hygiene Plan annually, maintaining a culture of safety, updating safety signage across campus laboratory facilities, providing annual safety training, organizing waste disposals, and inspecting laboratory safety equipment. While experience as a CHO is preferred, necessary training courses will be provided.
The Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry offers B.A. & B.S. chemistry, B.S. biochemistry, B.S. materials chemistry, and B.S. pharmaceutical science majors. It is housed in the Christopher Hall of Science and the Reemsnyder Research Center, which have facilities for organic/bioorganic teaching and research and are well equipped with modern instrumentation. The department has acquired over $700,000 in external grants in the past six years, and the majority of Wesleyan chemistry/biochemistry students pursue graduate, medical, and professional schools.
