Jazz Concert Slated for Thursday in Performing Arts Center
On Thursday, March 17, West Virginia Wesleyan College’s Music Department will be hosting a jazz concert in the Culpepper Auditorium in the Virginia Thomas Center for the Performing Arts. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and will feature Big Band I, directed by professor music and department chair Dr. James Moore, and Big Band II, under the baton of Instructor of Music Kyle Andrews.
This concert is a rarity because both bands will be strictly playing pieces by Benny Carter, a 1930s American Jazz musician. Big Band I will feature Central City Sketches Suite, and Big Band II will perform Kansas City Suite. The piece will feature the Bands’ strong instrumentation and solid rhythm section. The pieces were written for The American Jazz Orchestra Count Basie Orchestra. The pieces in the Central City Sketches Suite, consist of music Carter wrote in the 30s, 40s, and 60s, some of which include themes for some motion pictures. Kansas City Suite, written in the 60s for the Count Basie Orchestra, consists of pieces which vary in style and tempo.
The concert will be free and open to the public.
