Story by Ebony Lincoln, Director of Communications, General Board of Higher Education and Ministry

NASHVILLE, Tenn., - The General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) today announced that Dr. Theodore "Ted" Brown '73 will serve as the interim associate general secretary for the agency’s Division of Higher Education. Brown’s appointment will be effective April 3, 2017.

Brown has served on the GBHEM Board of Directors for two consecutive quadrennia, as vice president for the Division of Higher Education. Brown also served as the president of the International Association of Methodist Schools, Colleges, and Universities (IAMSCU).

Until his retirement in January 2017, Brown served as the 30th president of Martin Methodist College for nearly 20 years. During his tenure, Brown initiated an ambitious 10-year plan of development for the college. The Martin 2010 Plan tripled enrollment to nearly 1,200 students, added 36 academic programs of study, expanded the campus by almost 50 acres, constructed and renovated eight buildings and raised more than $42 million for the college. The successor, Martin 2020 Plan, is now well underway.

“We are pleased to have Dr. Ted Brown serve as interim associate general secretary for the Division of Higher Education,” said Rev. Dr. Kim Cape, general secretary at GBHEM. “Dr. Brown has been an invaluable member of our board of directors and advisor for our work in higher education. We are grateful to Dr. Brown for his continued commitment to GBHEM and his assistance during this time of transition.”

Brown served as chair of the Giles County Chamber of Commerce and president of the Pulaski Rotary Club, along with service to the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club. He was a member of the executive board of the Middle Tennessee Boy Scout Council and served in various roles with the David Crocket District Committee. He also served on the South Central Tennessee Workforce Development Board. In 2014, Brown completed his three-year term as chair of the Council of Presidents of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Brown is a native of southern New Jersey and grew up as an active member of The United Methodist Church. He graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College with a degree in Philosophy. Brown later earned his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Philosophy in Higher Education Leadership at Vanderbilt University. He also conducted post-doctoral work at Harvard University.
