Wesleyan Announces New Board of Trustees
At the Founders Day ceremony at West Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday, October 7, 11 new members of the College Board of Trustees were sworn in by President Pamela Balch ’71 and Chair of the Board of Trustees Gavin Appleby ’76.
Sean Boyle of Sugar Land, TX is the Vice President of NE Trading for Castleton Commodities International (CCI) in Houston, TX. Prior to assuming his position in April 2013, he was the Manager of NE Trading for British Gas. He was worked in the energy sector since graduating from Wesleyan. He received a bachelor of science in engineering physics and a master of business administration from Wesleyan.
Rev. Dr. Ellis Conley ’73 of Hurricane, WV is the current pastor of Forrest Burdette United Methodist Church in Hurricane, WV. Prior to his appointment, he served as the District Superintendent of the Mon Valley District, Pastor at First United Methodist Church in Elkins, and Pastor of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church in Buckhannon. He has previously served as a member of Wesleyan’s Board of Trustees for eight years (2005-2013) and is a current board member of The United Methodist Foundation of West Virginia. After graduating from Wesleyan, he received his Master of Divinity from the Candler School of Theology and a doctor of ministry from Drew University.
C. Suzanne Ellis is a 1971 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College with a degree in elementary education. She also received a master’s degree from Marshall University in 1976 and a master of divinity degree from Methodist Theological School in Ohio in 2001. A retired ordained Deacon in the West Virginia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church, she is now serving as the Vocational Discernment Coordinator for the Annual Conference.
Paul Klick III of Longboat Key, FL is a 1966 graduate of Wesleyan. A 40-year real estate veteran, he was the founder, president and CEO of EQ Services, Inc., a subsidiary of Equitable Real Estate. He received an MBA from Rutgers University and served as a Captain in the United States Air Force.
Cynthia Moore-Koikoi is the resident Bishop of the Western Pennsylvania Conference of The United Methodist Church. She earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Loyola College and a master of arts and advanced certification in school psychology from the University of Maryland. She worked as a School Psychologist for Anne Arundel County Public Schools for 17 years before answering her call to ordained ministry. Bishop Moore-Koikoi then completed her master of divinity degree at Wesley Theological Seminary in 2007.
Jeffrey Neal, a native of Buckhannon, is a rheumatologist in private practice at the Arthritis Center of Lexington in Lexington, KY. He graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1980 and graduated from West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1984. His post-graduate training was at West Virginia University, University of North Carolina, and University of Louisville. He actively participates in clinical research studies and has co-authored several publications. He also serves as an associate professor at the University of Kentucky.
Evan Peterson, a 1973 Wesleyan graduate, spent 41 years in independent schools as a teacher, coach, dean of students, director of admissions, upper school Principal, and for the last 23 years as Head of School in Virginia and Texas. He received his master’s from Kean University and also studied at Oxford University in 1999 in a doctorate program with Virginia Tech. Peterson has been published in school leadership books and has spoken at national and international conferences on the changes taking place in education in the 21st century and how to lessen student stress in school. He divides his time between Florida and North Carolina.
Joanne Cadorette Soliday of Whitsett, NC is a 1969 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College. She is a higher education consultant and strategic planning specialist of Credo. She earned a master’s of education degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and pursued divinity studies at Duke University. She has taught in the public school system, was Director of Consultation and Education at Alamance County Mental Health Center, on staff at Elon University, and returned to Wesleyan in 1996 as the Vice President for External Relations.
Kevin Spear of Atlanta, GA s a 1976 graduate of Wesleyan. He also received his master in business administration in marketing from the Katz School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh. He is currently retired after a career as a sales and client relations executive for several firms including PNC Bank, United Parcel Service, and PSCU Financial Services. Spear has been and continues to be actively involved in trade associations and civil and charitable causes.
Shirley Fortney is an ex-officio voting member in her role as Chair of the Faculty. She received her bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Fairmont State University and master’s degree in elementary education from the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies while teaching in the public schools. She later earned a second master's in special education from Marshall University and a doctorate from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. She joined the Wesleyan faculty in 1992 and is currently an associate professor of education.
Alisa Lively returned to the Board as an ex-officio voting member in her role as Chair of Staff Council. She served in this same role from 2008-2012. She is the Director of Campus Life and has worked at Wesleyan for 29 years. Alisa serves on the West Virginia State Board of Directors for Special Olympics, Create Buckhannon, ART26201, the Buckhannon Police Civil Service Commission, and the Board of Directors for the Buckhannon-Upshur Work Adjustment Center.
