Lincoln Expert and Bestselling Author to Present at Wesleyan on February 15

Ronald C. White, internationally-known and bestselling author of A. Lincoln: A Biography, will present “Abraham Lincoln 2017: Wisdom for Today” at West Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday, February 15 at 7 p.m. in Wesley Chapel on the Buckhannon campus.  A book signing will immediately follow the event, which is free and open to the public.

Keeping in mind that Abraham Lincoln is a 19th century leader, Lincoln biographer White will present excerpts from Lincoln’s speeches, letters, and notes to himself to show how Lincoln’s wisdom- as a lawyer, politician, president, and commander-in-chief- can still speak to us today.  Join in the discovery of Lincoln’s artistry with words and discover how, for our divided nation, Lincoln’s inclusive words offer a powerful contemporary call for reconciliation.

White is the author of A. Lincoln: A Biography, a New York TimesWashington Post, and Los Angeles Times bestseller. He is also the author of the bestsellers Lincoln’s Greatest Speech: The Second Inaugural, honored as a New York Times Notable Book of 2002, and The Eloquent President: A Portrait of Lincoln Through His Words. He has written Op-Eds appearing in the New York TimesWashington PostLos Angeles Times, and Christian Science Monitor. His latest presidential biography, American Ulysses: A Life of Ulysses S. Grant, offers a surprising portrait that reshapes our understanding of an American hero.

A frequent and popular speaker, White brings history alive to give context to today’s issues. In his lectures on Ulysses S. Grant, White refocuses the life of self-effacing American Ulysses who points beyond himself to a panoply of enduring values. White has lectured at the White House and been interviewed on the PBS News Hour.

He is a graduate of UCLA and Princeton Theological Seminary with a Ph.D. in Religion and History from Princeton University. He has taught at UCLA, Princeton Theological Seminary, Whitworth University, Colorado College, Rider University, and San Francisco Theological Seminary. He is a Fellow at the Huntington Library and a Senior Fellow of The Trinity Forum. He received the Doctor of Humane Letters from Whitworth University in 2009. He lives with his wife, Cynthia, in La Cañada, CA.

While on campus, White will explore one of the Annie Merner Pfieffer (AMP) Library’s Special Collection, the Jones Lincoln Collection, which contains printed works and artifacts related to the 16th president of the United States.  It is the lifetime collection of Wesleyan alumnus Dr. Charles Aubrey Jones ’49, who at the time of his death in 1974, had the third largest collection of Lincoln artifacts in the U.S.  Among the rarest documents are campaign publications prepared by Lincoln’s opponents in 1894 of which some are solely preserved at Wesleyan.  The Lincoln Collection was presented to the College by Dr. Jones’ daughter, Elizabeth Jones.

Copies of White’s books are available for pre-order at a discounted price at the AMP Library or by contacting Paula McGrew, director of library services, at Mcgrew_p@wvwc.edu or (304) 473-8462.  A. Lincoln in paperback is $12, and American Ulysses in hardback is $21.
