West Virginia Wesleyan College has received another high national ranking by a college publication guide. The Washington Monthly College Guide has listed Wesleyan as the 27th best Baccalaureate College in 2014.
Washington Monthly Magazine based its rating on Wesleyan’s contribution to the public good in three broad categories: Social Mobility, Research, and Service.
Wesleyan has always been known for its commitment to service. Over 80 percent of its students are actively involved in projects that are coordinated by the Center for Community Engagement and Leadership Development. The CCE offers leadership certification courses to enable students to gain more skills that will benefit them in their careers and volunteer efforts.
The magazine recognized what Wesleyan offers because the more expensive college becomes, the more students are encouraged to see higher education as a mere return on investment. The students who attend the Washington Monthly’s “best colleges” are taught by example and challenged to look beyond themselves and give back.
The Washington Monthly is a publication covering politics, government, culture and the media.
Wesleyan began its academic year on Monday, with an enrollment that is expected to surpass 1,500 students for the first time since 2002. The total includes over 465 new students, the second largest entering class in a decade. The private residential college is in the process of completing over $7.5 million in construction projects that include the O’Roark Nordstrom Welcome Center and renovations to classrooms, residence halls, the soccer field, and the multi-purpose athletic complex.
Located in Buckhannon, Wesleyan offers 47 undergraduate majors and graduate programs in athletic training, business administration, education, English creative writing, and nursing.
