Jazz Bands to Perform Concerts; Pay Tribute to Phil Woods
The chromatic musings of jazz music will fill the air at West Virginia Wesleyan College this Thursday, Oct. 29 as Big Band I and Big Band II will be performing a fall concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Culpepper Auditorium of the Virginia Thomas Law Center for the Performing Arts.
Big Band I, under the direction of Dr. James Moore, professor of music and chair of the Music Department, will be paying tribute to legendary saxophonist Phil Woods who passed away a few weeks ago.
Woods, best known to the everyday listener as the saxophonist on Billy’s Joels “Just the Way You Are,” performed his final concert on September 4 with Moore listed as his second horn player. They performed several selections from albums recorded by Clifford Brown and Donald Byrd.
Big Band II, under the direction of new Instructor of Music and Visiting Artist-in-Residence Kyle Andrews ’12, will feature the music of jazz composers from the ’40s-’60s.
“The students in both groups have done tremendous work preparing for this concert in short amount of time,” commented Moore. “Big Band I began working on this music soon after the passing of Master Woods, putting aside the music we had been working on up to that point.”
The event is free and open to the public.
