Dr. Thomas B. Courtice to Speak at Commencement; Receive Honorary Degree
Dr. Thomas B. Courtice, associate managing principle and senior consultant for the Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges (AGB) Search, will speak at West Virginia Wesleyan College’s Commencement. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 9 at 10 a.m. in the John D. Rockefeller IV Physical Education Building. Courtice will also receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the College during the ceremony.
During his tenure as a senior consultant at Academic Search, Inc., Dr. Courtice served as the firm’s president and completed nearly 50 searches for college and university presidents and chancellors, provosts, vice presidents, and deans. He served as president of Ohio Wesleyan University from 1994-2004, achieving financial equilibrium at the institution. Under his leadership, the university successfully completed a $100 million capital campaign.
Dr. Courtice served as the 16th president of West Virginia Wesleyan College from 1986-1994. Under his ruling, the College saw a 20% enrollment growth, successful completion of the Second Century Campaign, the addition of new academic and co-curricular programs, and a strong emphasis on community service.
Prior to his arrival at Wesleyan, Dr. Courtice was the president of Westbook College in Maine from 1977-1984 and served as a faculty member and administrator at Hamline University in Minnesota from 1967-1977.
Dr. Courtice has served on the Board of Trustees at Ripon College in Wisconsin and Hilbert College in New York, the Advisory Board of the Appalachian College Association, the NCAA Executive Committee, and several education associations. He has been an invited speaker and present at several national association meetings, having participated recently in AGB’s National Conference on Trusteeship, CIC’s President’s Institute, and ACE’s Advancing to the Presidency Seminar.
Dr. Courtice holds degrees from the University of Pittsburgh, Indiana University, and the University of Minnesota.
