250 Graduates Cap Off College Experience with Commencement Week Activities
On Saturday, May 9, 250 graduating West Virginia Wesleyan College seniors and master’s students will commemorate their Wesleyan experience and receive their degrees during the Commencement ceremonies, set to begin at 10 a.m. in the John D. Rockefeller IV Physical Education Building.
Dr. Thomas B. Courtice, 16th president of Wesleyan, will speak to students at Commencement as well as receive an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. Following the ceremony, there will be a buffet in the dining center beginning at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are required for both Commencement and the buffet.
Before Saturday’s affairs, Wesleyan will host several events to honor the 2015 graduates and also celebrate its alumni.
“Commencement weekend is a time of great celebration,” said Robert Skinner ‘75, vice president for advancement. “The 2015 graduating class has brought great recognition to Wesleyan through their successes in the classroom, academic scholarship competitions, athletics, the arts, and community engagement. Many have been accepted to graduate and professional schools while others are ready to begin the next chapter of their lives in the workplace. We are eager to welcome their family and friends to campus for this most special occasion.”
The Commencement week festivities will begin on Wednesday, May 6, with Gradfest, a picnic dinner and party for graduates of both the master’s and bachelor’s programs. Hosted at the 88 Restaurant/Bicentennial Inn, the event is a ticket-only occasion for graduating students only.
The events continue on Thursday, May 7, with the Master’s Programs Dinner for graduates of the master’s program and their guests. This event will begin at 6 p.m. at the 88 Restaurant/Bicentennial Inn, and tickets are required.
On Friday, May 8, Wesleyan President Dr. Pamela Balch ’71 will host a brunch for graduates and their families from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Annie Merner Pfeiffer Library.
Also on Friday, everyone is welcome to visit the Senior Art Exhibit and reception, which will be open from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Sleeth Gallery. Other schools, such as the School of Nursing and School of Education, will host their own receptions that day. The Commencement Banquet will take place on Friday evening in the French A. See Dining Center. Tickets are required for this event. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6 p.m.
The Reverend Dr. Jerry Wood ’73 will speak at the Baccalaureate ceremony, which will begin at 8 p.m. in Wesley Chapel. The service will be followed by an ice cream social on the Chapel Green.
