Human Resource Management Concentration

BUSI 610: Management Accounting (pre-requisite of UG Principles of Accounting)
BUSI 620: Financial Management & Policy (pre-requisite of UG Principles of Finance)
BUSI 631: Management Theory & Leadership in Organizations (pre-rec UG Principles of Management)

Concentration in Human Resource Management (12 credit hours):

BUSI 534: Human Resource Management. An introduction to the theoretical, technical, and legalaspects of human resources management and employment relations.  Topics covered includehuman resources planning, recruitment, selection, performance evaluation, training and development, compensation, labor relations, occupational safety and health, and the evaluation ofhuman resource management programs.

BUSI 562: Labour Economics. The objective is for students to develop an understanding of the modern theory of labor-market behavior and gain the ability to apply related economic concepts. Topics include labor demand, labor supply, compensating wage differentials, investments in human capital,wage determination, earnings differences, unionism, and unemployment.

BUSI 572: Negotiation & Conflict Resolution. An introduction to the fundamental concepts and practices of negotiation and conflict resolution. This involves discussions about the nature of negotiation, the strategy and planning involved in negotiation, and the role that communication, power, relationships and ethics play in negotiation. In addition, the students will be introduced to the concepts of conflict resolution in the workplace.

BUSI XXX: Project Management. The Project Management MBA course uses a problem-based approach to create experiences that provide a thorough knowledge and understanding of Project Management.

 

Market Need:
Human Resource Management
Human Resource Professionals are employed as generalists as well as specialists in a variety of fields.  Generalists are typically responsible for the functions of staffing, training and development, compensation management, personnel process, and employee evaluation within a single unit or organization.  Specialists may have more focused positions in any of the following areas:

  • Workforce Planning and Employment (recruitment, retention officer, staffing specialist)
  • HR Development (employee training and development, career planning and counseling)
  • Rewards and Benefits (salary administrator, compensation analyst, benefits specialist, job analyst)
  • Employee and Labor Relations
  • Risk Management

Job prospects in the HR Management fields are strong.  There has been a 70% increase in HR-related jobs since 2009; in 2011, there were over 8,000 HR jobs available, nationally (shrm.org).  Currently (January 2013), there are nearly 55,000 HR positions posted in indeed.com.

According to the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), one-quarter of the practitioners who hire entry-level human resource professionals reported that the selection criteria for entry-level HR positions are more stringent than those of other entry-level business positions. The lack of a formal HR education was the most frequently-reported obstacle to advancing the human resource careers of professionals with five or fewer years of HR work experience.

While there are dozens of online programs in HR Management, in West Virginia only two institutions of higher education offer degrees in Human Resource Management.  Marshall University offers an MS in HRM, and WVU offers an MS in Industrial Relations.
