Machine Shop

Our machine shop has a milling machine, lathe, band saw, circular saw, and two drill presses. In 1998, Bob Grose started working as our instrument technician after 37 year experience at Corhart Refractories. We are fortunate to have a person with Bobís skills.

Bob interacts with all students. Freshman Engineering Design students appreciate Bobís help with their design projects. Bob also gives students technical assistance in upper-level labs. He teaches a machine-shop course. And Senior Research students rely extensively on Bobís advice.

Bob has worked on some highly technical projects. These include the vacuum system for the mass spectrometer in the Atomic Physics Lab, the steam engine in the Engineering Measurements Lab, and the helium dilution refrigerator in Solid State Lab.

In his spare time, Bob enjoys restoring antique cars. He also participates in Civil War re-enactments by dressing up as Robert E. Lee and shooting a cannon that he built.
