Shawn Mahoney Kuba

Shawn Mahoney Kuba

Director of the Learning Center

Shawn grew up in Arlington, Virginia. She began working with students who have learning challenges at the Hill Top School in Rosemont, Pennsylvania as a teacher and group therapist. Moving with her husband Mike (Instructor, WVWC Psychology Department) and daughter Katie, to Buckhannon, she began working in the WVWC Special Support Services Program as a counselor and later became the director of the Learning Center. Shawn earned a doctorate in Educational Psychology at West Virginia University and published her thesis on the post-secondary transition and persistence of students with diagnosed learning disabilities. Shawn spends as much time as possible hiking, biking, and running in the woods with her husband Mike and new Goldendoodle, Opie. 


Suzanne Haas

Suzanne's connection with Wesleyan began when she was in the sixth grade and her father became the Director of Admissions. She graduated from Wesleyan in 1967 with a degree in elementary education. She continued her education at West Virginia University and earned a Master's degree in Reading in 1969. She left her West Virginia hills to explore the world and experienced life around three cities in the megalopolis of the eastern seaboard: Washington, DC, New York, and Baltimore before following the interstate highways and country roads back to home: Buckhannon and Wesleyan. In 1991 she received a Permanent Professional Teaching Certificate as a Reading Specialist from the state of West Virginia. She joined the Learning Center in 1981 as instructional staff. In that position she initiated and coordinated the Campus Services component for the Learning Center. She became a Comprehensive Advisor and Tutor Supervisor with the Learning Center in 1999.

Susan is a West Virginia Wesleyan College alumna, having graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She earned a Master of Arts in Applied Experimental Psychology from Southern Illinois University Carbondale in 2007. She has worked in the Learning Center since August 2007, acting as a comprehensive advisor, technology lab coordinator, and instructor of college study strategies classes. Susan’s interests include knitting, yoga, and gardening.


Jodee Wilt

M.S.

Jodee grew up in New Jersey and earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from The College of NJ.  After working for an advertising company for five years, she decided that teaching and working with young adults was her true passion.  She earned her Masters of Science in Teaching from Rowan University.  Jodee taught high school math for seven years in New Jersey and Texas.  In 2012, Jodee and her family moved to Buckhannon, her husband’s hometown, and in 2013 she joined the staff of the Learning Center to work in the Mentor Advantage Program. Jodee’s interests include playing the piano, cooking, baking, gardening, and exploring the beautiful Mountain State with her husband and daugther.


Anita Dib

Comprehensive Advisor, Coordinator of the Mentor Advantage Program

Anita is a West Virginia native who lives in Barbour County; She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Alderson Broaddus College, double majoring in Political Science and Speech/Communications.  In 1995, she furthered her education with a Master of Arts Degree in Special Education from West Virginia University.  Anita spent more than 15 years teaching in the public school system in classrooms for students with learning disabilities, behavior disorders, and mild impairments.  She and her husband, who is an active duty Public Health Service Officer, stay busy with their two children and their activities.  She is an avid volunteer for organizations such as 4H, Boy Scouts of America, and Animal Friends of Barbour County.


Sarah Hollen

Sarah was born and raised in Buckhannon, West Virginia and is a 1998 Buckhannon Upshur High School graduate. She graduated from Fairmont State University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Sign Language Interpreter’s Degree. Sarah has been interpreting full time in education, medical, and community settings for 11 years. She is a fan of soccer (especially when her boys are on the field) and likes reading with her daughter.


Teresa Buckner

Teresa graduated from Eastern New Mexico University in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in university studies.  She has worked in the Mentor Advantage Program as an organizational mentor and strategic content tutor since the program was developed in 2007. Her professional background includes work in the accounting field and in the hospitality industry. Teresa is active in the community, supporting her children in activities including sports and 4H.


Julia Brady

Julia Brady retired after working nearly 40 years for the Upshur County (West Virginia) Board of Education in 2014; she spent the last 17 years as a sixth grade science teacher at Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School. Julia earned a bachelors degree from the University of South Florida and a graduate degree in Specific Learning Disabilities/Education from West Virginia University. Julia and her husband, Ron, a West Virginia Wesleyan alumnus who is retired from teaching students with significant disabilities, have lived on the family farm near French Creek since 1975. They have 2 adult children who live in Huntington. The Brady family enjoys travelling, camping, hunting, and fishing together. They also raise and train bird dogs.


Donna Broslawsky

Mentor Advantage Program Tutor

Donna was born and raised in Preston County, West Virginia. In 1980 she earned a BS degree in Biology and Secondary Education with specializations in General Science from West Virginia Wesleyan. Later on she received her Masters in Communication Studies from WVU. She taught science at Buckhannon Upshur Middle School for twenty-one years along with coaching girls basketball a few of those years until her children started coming along. Donna finished up her teaching career in Harrison County where she taught middle school science, high school biology, and zoology. Donna loves sports, both as a player and spectator. In high school she played on the first ever girls basketball team, and in college she was on the first women's volleyball team at Alderson Broaddus College. She is a Master Naturalist and loves to help others appreciate the diversities of our natural world. She is active in both her church and community. Camping, biking, fishing, and gardening are her favorite outdoor activities. When she can't get outside she can be found reading or cooking. She also loves spending time with her husband, Joe, and her three grown daughters and their families.


Marissa Gain

Marissa is a WVWC alum. She completed her BA in Painting and Drawing in 2015. She minored in education and is excited for the opportunity to help other's learn. She hopes to eventually teach art.

 


Ciara Goff

Ciara is a West Virginia Wesleyan College alumna; she graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, also concentrating her studies in Education and Dance. Ciara began working in the Learning Center’s Test Lab as the Test Lab Coordinator in 2014. In 2016, she became a professional tutor for the Learning Center's Evening Check-In program. Her interests include genealogy, reading, and attending Wesleyan events. Above all, Ciara loves spending time with family, especially her husband, Jonathan and daughter and son, Alette and Daniel.


Diana Johnson

Diana Johnson was born in Morgantown grew up in Point Pleasant, West Virginia. She obtained a BS in Chemistry Education from West Virginia University Institute of Technology in 1994.  Diana taught in the public school system for 16 years, most recently in Monett, Missouri where she taught Chemistry and Advanced Placement Chemistry. After spending most of their lives away from West Virginia, Diana and her husband, Greg were glad to recently move to Elkins, West Virginia where he is employed by Davis Memorial Hospital. They have two grown children and three Scottish terriers.  Diana enjoys cooking, reading, spending time with family, and bicycling. 


April Keating

April is a 1990 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan with a Bachelor of Arts in English and has been tutoring in the Mentor Advantage Program since 2008. She has experience in journalism and teaches yoga. Married to Dr. Bernard Keating (philosophy), they have three children, all of whom were homeschooled. She has a dog and three cats, and enjoys cooking, swimming, writing, music, dancing, and dark chocolate. April is a kinesthetic learner.


Betsy Leigh

Betsy Leigh earned her undergraduate degree in Family Resources and her M.B.A. from West Virginia University She became a stay-home mom when her daughter was born in 1993; her son was born twenty-two months later. In 2002, her children's elementary school principal suggested Betsy become a substitute teacher. Since that time, Betsy has enjoyed working for the Upshur County (West Virginia) school system, substitute-teaching all grades and subjects until starting at The Learning Center in 2014.

Betsy lives in Buckhannon with her husband, children, and four cats. She is a board member for Brushstroke Ministries and serves on the Breath of God Worship Ministry team. Her favorite thing to do is to sing, especially low harmony for both ministries’ worship teams.


Susan Mendicino

Susan Mendicino grew up in California, PA where she attended California University of Pennsylvania for both undergraduate and graduate degrees in Speech Pathology. She earned her national certification in 1991. After working as a speech pathologist in Delaware for one year, Susan and her husband Michael moved to Buckhannon, WV. Susan worked as a speech pathologist in the Upshur County Schools for 32 years, retiring in September 2013. She began work at the Learning Center in August 2014. Susan has two grown daughters and three grandchildren (one set of twins). She loves animals, working out, and baking.


Brooke Scott

Brooke Scott is a recently retired educator who taught in the Upshur County (West Virginia) school system for 34 years. She received her undergraduate degree from Morehead State University (Kentucky) in Special Education with a graduate degree in Educational Administration from West Virginia University. She taught in the area of elementary learning disabilities for 27 years before completing her career in the first grade classroom.

Brooke is an assistant leader in 4-H and volunteers for various animal rescue organizations. For several years she and her husband showed basset hounds in the ring and in field competition. Now they own and love rescue greyhounds. Brooke loves being outdoors, hiking, traveling, and reading. Presently she is working on obtaining her Master Naturalist certification.

Bill earned both of his degrees from West Virginia University - he completed his Bachelor of Science in Education (Secondary English specialization) in 1996 and Master of Arts in Reading, 2003. He taught English at Frankfort High School for 5 years, before moving to Johnson City while his wife did research at East Tennessee State University.  After the birth of his daughter in 2009, Bill moved back home to West Virginia and began working as a reading clinician here at Wesleyan’s Learning Center in May of 2010. He has been the Coordinator of Lindamood Bell®* Methods program since August 2011.


 

Margie Miller

Reading, the conveyance which transported this young girl from rural West Virginia to imagined real places, also directed her teaching career. It led her to schools in Southwestern Ohio and Southern California in the 1950s; to Montgomery County, Maryland, in 1960-89. Margie instilled a joy for reading in six young grandchildren, as with her daughter and son, their parents, years earlier.  Upshur County Read Aloud and Literacy Volunteers benefitted from her reading initiatives in 1990.  West Virginia Wesleyan College’s Learning Center established a program using Lindamood-Bell®*Methods in 1992 and trained her as a reading clinician. Seven decades of application have refined those reading skills with enlightenment, entertainment, and empowerment. Margie earned her Bachelor of Arts in English from West Virginia Wesleyan.


Samantha Richter

Samantha graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Writing, and a minor in Religious Studies. She lives in the small community of Ireland, WV. She enjoys reading and writing poetry about rural life and Appalachia. She is happiest while working on her grandfather’s farm, and when taking care of her husband, CJ and her son, Levi. She also plays bluegrass music and loves sharing stories in every artistic form.

 


Carla Waldo

Test Lab Supervisor

B.A.

Carla graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College with a degree in sociology and anthropology.  She and her husband, Mark, have raised two sons. Her primary career focus has been human services with an emphasis on community behavioral health. She is a past board member of the Upshur Senior Center, Upshur Human Resources, and Buckhannon Work Adjustment Center. Carla has been the coordinator of the Upshur Parish House community garden for the past two years, facilitates a Batterers Intervention and Prevention Program class, and provides parent training for divorcing couples. She became part of the Learning Center team in 2008 as coordinator of the Test Lab, moving into the supervisory role in 2010. Carla is happiest with her hands in the garden dirt or working with her knitting needles.


Lori Post

Test Lab Coordinator and Proctor

Lori’s relationship with WVWC began with a library card that she obtained while in the third grade.  That was the beginning of her love of reading.  She has been a Literacy Volunteer and Read Aloud Coordinator / Reader.  WV authors and storytellers were introduced to local school children through programs developed by her.  She created children’s summer reading programs and story time for libraries, as well as organized book drives for schools and flooded libraries.  Lori brings a diverse career to the Test Lab which spans from Community Support Specialist for The ARC of Harrison County where she assisted adults with varying degrees of intellectual and physical disabilities, to the FBI as a Fingerprint Examiner.  While at The ARC she created a very successful program in which Literacy Volunteers work with adults with developmental disabilities learn to read. She was also ski coach for the WV Special Olympics of Harrison County ski team.  She has been an accountant, bookkeeper, and Director of Development and Fundraising.  As a very active member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church she serves as Lector, CCD Teacher, and Alter Server Coordinator. She is a Proctor for the ACT Test Administration, and member of The Holly River Foundation, the North Central WV Astronomy Club and the Forest Stewardship Council.  Lori is the mother of six red-headed children.  Her oldest daughter is a State of WV Mine Inspector in Morgantown while she and her husband Jerome reside on 53 acres with their five very active teenagers in Ireland, WV.

Marion is a 1995 graduate of Buckhannon-Upshur High School.  She earned a Bachelor of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Fairmont State College in 1999 and a Master of Education degree from Fairmont State University in 2008.  Her professional experience includes retail management, social services, and adult education.  She resides in Buckhannon with her husband Bill, son Will, and a yellow lab/golden retriever mix Rascal.  She enjoys spending time with family and friends and supporting her son in various activities such as Boy Scouts, swim team, and band.   


Josh Lopitz

Admissions Counselor/Learning Center Recruiter

B.A.

Josh grew up in Leonardtown, MD and earned a bachelor of the arts in communication studies from Wesleyan in 2016. Josh joined the Admissions Team in June of 2016 and will be our Learning Center Recruitment Counselor. While at Wesleyan Josh was involved in Greek Life, Outdoor Rec, Student Senate, Wesleyan Ambassadors, and a Discus Thrower for the Men’s Track and Field Team. Josh loves being in the outdoors and helping others. When Josh is not traveling for the Admissions Team he can be found playing his PlayStation, sleeping, working out, or catching up on the latest Marvel and DC Universe comics.  Josh is also the organizer for Wesleyan’s Pre-Orientation Trip for Freshman which he highly recommends everyone sign up for!
